Data Science Resume Guide: Fix These Mistakes

TRANSCRIPT

I’ve been on both sides. I’ve been a job seeker and a HR executive. Today, I want to share the real reasons résumés fail—and how to make yours stand out.

Recruiters often spend as little as 6 seconds per résumé. You need to sell your skill set fast.

If you’re entry level, frontload your projects.
If you’re senior, lead with your leadership wins.
If you’re mid-career, bridge the gap with your transferable skills.

Many résumés don’t even reach a human—they’re filtered out by ATS systems scanning for keywords.

Here’s how I coach my clients. It’s simple: mirror the job description exactly.

If they say “machine learning,” don’t write “ML” or “AI.” Use their exact words.
Pro tip: use AI to help.
Enhancv has a résumé builder and job tracker that pick out keywords from the job description and help you tailor your résumé precisely.

HR doesn’t just trust self-appointed experts.

You can’t just say “Advanced Python.” You need to prove it. Link your GitHub in your header. A clean repo with a solid README beats ten bullet points.

Most of the time, the first person reading your résumé isn’t a data scientist—it’s a HR manager, recruiter, or department head who may not understand the technical details. They’re working off a brief or hiring criteria. They don’t have the context to decode jargon or niche tools.

That’s why I tell clients to use what I call the CEO filter:
Would a CEO understand what this bullet point means and why it matters?
A CEO isn’t involved early in hiring, but they represent top-level thinking—results, outcomes, impact.
So instead of saying:
Deployed NLP model

Say:
Reduced customer support volume by 40% by launching an NLP chatbot.
The point isn’t to dumb it down—it’s to make sure anyone, technical or not, can understand the value you delivered.

Now you know exactly what HR wants from a data scientist résumé.
