For lawyers — juniors, in-house counsel, and partners. I’m Nate, with 13 years in HR and hiring, here to help you make partners notice and call.
STEP ONE: RESUME FORMAT
Use a reverse chronological layout so your most recent, high-impact work is front and center. Include a targeted 3–5 line summary at the top that mirrors the job description. Keep the layout clean and show clear progression.
STEP TWO: PROVE YOUR SOFT SKILLS
Don’t just list skills. Demonstrate them with achievement-focused bullets.
Example: Instead of “Negotiation,” write: “Negotiated settlement agreements, saving clients 15% in legal fees.”
Weave communication, leadership, and project management into outcomes, not objectives.
STEP THREE: QUANTIFY YOUR IMPACT
Translate legal work into business value: dollars saved, risk reduced, time reclaimed, or volume handled.
Lead bullets with results, then show the action that produced them.
Examples:
- “Led contract negotiations, delivering $15M in annual savings.”
- “Implemented compliance training — violations down by 25%.”
ACTION STEP FOR ENTRY-LEVEL LAWYERS
Replace vague objectives with a targeted summary. Highlight relevant clinics, internships, or pro bono work, and include one concrete metric or skill to demonstrate value.
